 What's New!

August 10th, 2002

Have been busy with correcting errors to the menu. Still haven´t caught all of them.

However, the biggest change that everyone will see . . . and one I like, it the translation button that I´ve added to the menu . . . compliments of FreeTranslations. Took a lot of work to modify the code to get it to work in a compact manner but I think you will like it. Try it on your favorite page.

Now, for the next few days I need to bring the members side current. Thank you, everyone, for your patience.

I am ashamed of myself. Yeah, I consider myself a techie geek and think I know what I´m doing. I guess I could claim that in reality I am not a web site designer by trade and being a webmaster has little to do with Information Security, but geez, a little common sense.

Nah, I´m poking fun at myself. When I designed these pages I designed them for the browsers I figure most people have . . . that being Internet Explorer 5, 5.5, or 6. So I designed with that functionality in mind. I even cross-tested them in the latest version of Netscape (which personally I think is a resource hog). Big mistake.

I just could not understand the difficulties some vistors where having navigating this site and then I took a look for myself. Internet Explorer or Netscape older versions . . . or newer versions with javascript disabled. Well, that´s not going to work!!!!!! My only navigational menu was based on javascript and although it looks nice, is useless if javascript is disabled (or not there). And, although my favorite browser is Opera, for some reason, I never bothered to look at my own site with the Opera browser. And Mozilla presents some of it´s own difficulties dealing with plugins.

So this revamp . . . a huge undertaking to present the navigational menus in straight HTML . . . SO THAT ALL BROWSERS WILL BE ABLE TO SEE THEM! I have also created a version (method, more accurately) for viewing the site without the FRAMES.

So I hope you like the results . . . and since many long nights were spent trying to make sure there were no mistakes, I would appreciate it if you would let me know of any broken or dean-end links. I tried my best.

I guess "What´s New" is not of much use if I don´t let you know what I've been up to. So, I apologize for the hiatus.

One new picture added to the Photo Album Page. I have received a number of old photos from alumni that I am in the process of scanning and retouching. I expect to have quite a few posted by the end of this coming week.

You may have noticed a new icon above the "What´s New" icon, entitled, "Ask the WebMaster". If your visiting and you see from the icon that I am online, give me a holler. It´s a service allowing Anthonian Site vistors to start a real-time chat session with the WebMaster.

I've added a couple of games to the Entertainment Resources Page. I think you´ll like the Who Whats To Be A Millioniare-style quiz game. On the same page are links to Astrology and Horoscopes. But personally, I keep going back to the link that takes me on a Virtual Balut tour. If you don´t know what balut is, don´t ask! :-)

More music in the cultural and history pages. The music of the pre-dominantly-Muslim south is hard to come by. By I found one excellent resource and added those links on the page.

I have made many extensive changes to the members sides, content and functionality-wise in preparation to locking down the final form this site will take. That is were the emphasis will continue to remain in the spare time I have between consulting jobs for awhile.

Music Problems

Site for downloading a nice player for Noteworthy Player files (extension NWC) as well as MIDI files to allow you to see the scoring as you listen to them at NoteWorthy Try it with this Folk Song: Condiman This file is a NoteWorthy Music file with the extension of NWC. If you have installed the NoteWorthy Player as above, clicking on a file with this extension would open the NoteWorthy Player by default.

The Noteworthy Player can also open and play MIDI files (those with the extension MID) and score those files as well. If you would like the NoteWorthy Player to become the default player for MIDI files, open the My Documents icon on your desktop (you may need to minimize your open windows). Select any file with the MID extension This change affects all files that have the same file name extension as the file you selected. For example, if you change the program that opens a .mid file, all .mid files will open in this program. You can also change the program that opens a file by right-clicking the file, clicking Open With, and then clicking the program name. If the program you want is not displayed, click Browse. To change the program that opens a file Open My Documents. If the file you want is not located in My Documents or its subfolders, use Find Files to find it. To open Find, click Start, and then click Find (on Windows XP, Find is now called Search).

Right-click the file you want to open in a different program, and then click Properties.
On the General tab, click Change.
Click the name of the program in which you want the file to open, in this case NoteWorthy.

You can also open MIDI songs on a one by one basis in Noteworthy, and also open over the Internet as the NoteWorthy File Open dialog box is network-aware. Right-click over a link to a MIDI or NWC file, select Copy Shortcut, and then Paste this shortcut into the filename space on the Open File dialog. Windows should go out onto the Internet, download the song you desire, and start playing it in NoteWorthy.

Well got most of the Resources menu done . . . hope you like the links and if you want anything especially, let me know.

Moved the top navigation bar to the header instead on in each single main window . . . seemed better layput that way. Also re-wrote the color scheme.

Speaking of color, convinced the powers that be that red was just too hard on the eyes and she has allowed me to mute it a little with the 'beige' background tables. Thank me for arguing so hard against the school primary color :-)

Lots of MIDI music links on the pages and some have written that they cannot hear the music. I will put in a music FAQ later, but as a quick fix, check that you do not have MIDI turned off on your sound card. Double-click the speaker icon on your taskbar (or go to START-PROGRAMS-ACCESORIES-MULITIMEDIA-VOLUME CONTROL, and see if MIDI (or SYNTH) has a check in the MUTE or if the volume slider is turned way down.

Did a lot of cosmetic changes and correcting of spelling errors.

I have started work on a FAQ for both the public and members-only sides of the site, as well as working on privacy policies for membership. Relocated the What's New icon to the Resource Bar.

I have been handed a stack of links and material so soon I'm gonna have to populate the pages in the Resource area (like the education and culture links).

Added image rollovers to the thumbnail pages so let me know if you like them or if they get in the way.

Started some automating of membership signup procedures . . . now maybe I can get some sleep :-)

Added this page, a What's New page to keep you abreast of the construction of our website

Redid the Application for Membership page to streamline the input and add explanatory information on:

  • Benefits of Membership
  • Membership Eligibility, and,
  • a Privacy Policy on the use of submitted information

Added the ability to resize the lower right and left frames for those viewers who use a lower resolution and therefore need to horizontally scroll to see the page. This site was designed with the nominal 1024x768 monitor resolution. 800x600 will require scrolling right and left to see the entire page. If there are any other problems at lower resolutions, please let me know so I can correct them.

A few other cosmetic changes to clean up the site. Will clean up the What's New Icon soon.
